Hiking the Mt. Arrowsmith “Cut” with Hannah

image[4]This was a fun hike we did last month (sorry, we’re way behind on blog posts…more coming soon!) Dave has been working with two nurses, Hannah and Amanda, who are here in Port Alberni on temporary assignment, just for a few months. They wanted to do some hiking and see the sights while here, so they picked Dave’s brain about trails… and they ended up doing pretty much every trail around! They’ve seen way more of the wilds around Port Alberni than most people who have lived here their whole lives! Back in June, we took Hannah out for a hike… planning to do Mt. Moriarty (a trail that Dave has wanted to show me for years), but the road to the trailhead was closed due to heli-logging operations. So we went to do the Mt. Arrowsmith “Cut” instead – a steep climb that doesn’t go to the summit, but goes up to the dip between two of the peaks. Still high enough to get some pretty spectacular views, westward over the town of Port Alberni and eastward to the Strait of Georgia and the mainland. Here are some pix:

This is the “cut” – the dip in the mountain’s ridgeline. Almost there. We still went up to the right from here.

Here we are, at the top of our hike, with the main peaks of Mt. Arrowsmith behind us.

Poking around, exploring up top. Some pretty rugged terrain (and cool geology too).

A totally fun hike. Thanks, Hannah!

Arrowsmith “Cut” is new terminology for me. This spot is commonly referred to as the Arrowsmith “Saddle”.

Oh… that’s what Dave calls is, so I just went by that. (He was supposed to do this post, but never got around to it!)
