The third week in August was Ironman Canada. After 30 years in Penticton the race moved to Whistler, B.C. Whistler turned out to be an awesome venue location, the Village Stroll is always in party mode, there is tons of things for everyone to do while there, and its not too big to get lost or find your way.
When the Canada Ironman moved to Whistler from Pemberton, seven of us from Port Alberni decided to sign up. Rod Mitchell, Russ Kristensen, Gary Sutton, Dave Paruk, April Eryou, Colin Banks, and myself-David Gilbert.
When we arrived in Whistler we saw the Lulu lemon people were a little confused on what ‘Ironman’ was about to happen!
The four km swim portion was in Alta Lake, it was warm and clear. 2700 starters, mass start. Welcome to Ironman!
The 180 km cycle portion went South and up to the Olympic ski jumping site, then North through Pemberton to the end of the pavement on Pemberton flats and returned to Whistler.
Whistler Ironman run was 42 km through their bike paths, and they are about 75% shaded which is a real benefit.
We all appreciated the support from Dave Paruk. Dave had been hit by a car while training and could not race. Dave and his family showed up at Whistler to cheer us on and it was great to see them on the marathon course. Also a big thanks to everyone who donated pics for this post.
